Joel Stewart’s new single, Back up Team has just been released. Listen to it here.

It is impossible to not view the title and messaging of this single within the context of the strange times we are currently experiencing world-wide. We all feel a little confused and lost and we all need our friends and people that care for us around us. This is what makes us feel safe, this is what makes us feel as part of a bigger story. To review this track only within this context would be unfair though. It is definitely more timeless than that. It is definitely more layered than that.

It is a song about being there for one another and, to an extent being there for ourselves through being there for others. It is a song about supporting each other during tough times, or for that matter during all times. It is a song about not being shy to be vulnerable and open about what we need emotionally and what we can give emotionally.

The song starts of by immediately mentioning it’s title The Back Up Team making us, the listeners, an immediate part of the narrative that follows. Musically it falls within the sphere of the storytelling singer/songwriter genre. It takes listeners on a lyrical journey complimented by clean guitar sounds with a nice tone. The drums and synth sounds compliments the vibe of the song well and it is intelligently paced throughout.

Joel reminds us to not be scared to be there for each other. Being open and honest about what we need is a gift to be shared among friends. We all have stories to tell and if we don’t tell them they just get lost and lose their meaning.

It is refreshing to hear a track that shamelessly states something we all need to be reminded of without being preachy or prescriptive. Back up Team also touches on themes like social anxiety, the unwillingness to open up to people and the constant search for that something that always seem to elude us. That constant search for something that we have always been waiting for.

With the back-up of friends we trust and constant affirmation these things are all attainable. Don’t be scared and don’t you falter, press play and let me music be your anchor.
